-
Things IT Managers Should Know About Lotus Notes -
Lotus Notes is the "Ginsu knife" of application development.
It slices, it dices, it cuts both leather and tomatoes. This extreme flexibility means that Notes doesn't fit neatly into
a single software category in either its definition and functionality. But it also means that your investment in Notes
and Domino can deliver more than "just e-mail" to your organization. Are you taking advantage of what it can do?
-
Best practices in globalization: Developing IBM Lotus Notes applications -
Following these recommendations, you can easily create good multilanguage-friendly Lotus Notes applications,
which in turn can save you both resources and effort.
-
Helping customers globalize their IBM Lotus Notes applications -
Globalizing IBM Lotus Notes applications can be simple. IBM Lotus Domino Global Workbench, which is released with Lotus Notes and Domino,
can help customers globalize their applications quickly and easily. In version 8.5, Lotus Domino Global Workbench provides a new feature

Here to stay! Notes begins evolution into premier rich client for IBM Workplace -
While change will remain a constant, so will Notes — and so will IBM’s commitment to protecting customers’ existing Notes investments. ...
"There is a lot of change in store for the Notes client. Notes 7 and 7.5 and 8 will be different and significantly
more valuable – just as the current Notes 6.5 is different and significantly more valuable compared to Notes 4 and 4.6. So this
kind of change is nothing new; we’ve done it in the past, and it’s how we’ve consistently delivered new business value to our
customers. And as in the past, these upcoming versions will remain true to the Notes tradition of supporting and protecting the
investment our customers have made in Notes functionality, training and application development."

Light the birthday candles for Lotus Notes -
"Lotus Notes turns 15 on December 7 [2004]. Iris Associates, the software development company
from whence Notes emerged -- on the Lotus dime -- was founded five years earlier to the day. That's reason enough for Network World’s

Lotus Notes Turns 15 Years Old Today - Why Should You Care? -
"Compliance cannot succeed without collaboration. So what tool would you want to use? ...
Why you ask? Because after 15 years, the members of the Notes/Domino community get it:

Integration of IBM Lotus Notes/Domino with ERP Systems -
"Lotus Notes/Domino represents the most successful non-relational DBMS among those offered in the market.

Groove Networks (from the key inventor of Lotus Notes)
- Ray Ozzie's Weblog
>> Why "collaboration"?
-
Gartner interview with Ray Ozzie -
"20 years ago, I didn't have the grand vision one might imagine. I surely knew what I was trying to accomplish in terms
of enabling individuals to work together online more seamlessly - that is, in terms of collaborative productivity. But I didn't
fully grasp the importance of such tools, for example, to such things as business process re-engineering at an organizational
or cross-organizational level. These tools have had a tremendous impact, and to be sure, I'm amazed at how far things have come —
particularly when recalling that we were using IBM PC AT computers in character mode when we began this journey.
... What really does disappoint me is that we as technology users keep forgetting the lessons we learn; we've got very short memories. For example - issues of centralization versus
decentralization, control versus empowerment. There's a pendulum that appears to keep swinging back and forth, and we keep
polarizing the issue, when in fact we should have learned that both are necessary.
... ... ... ...
The greatest amount of value that Lotus Notes ever provided, besides the email
infrastructure, was as a rapid application
development platform that people at the edge of the organization - in a business unit - could use to whip up an application that
solved their problem instantly. Just-in-time, disposable solutions. As Notes was more embraced as central infrastructure,
IT buyers demanded that end-user design capabilities be re-shaped to target the needs of professional developers. Notes
environments became "locked down", and people closest to the needs lost their ability to do "self-service" solution
development. With Groove, we've brought that back."

Express offers Lotus new hope in SMB market -
"A survey earlier this year by Ferris Research Inc., a San Francisco-based analyst firm specializing in messaging and archival
technologies, found that 56% of mid-sized companies (500 to 2,499 employees) use Exchange, while just 16% use Lotus. For small firms with
fewer than 500 workers, the number of Exchange users jumps dramatically to 74%, with a mere 8% opting for Lotus. ... IBM has by no means conceded the SMB market to Microsoft. This year its Lotus group has released a three-product series of Domino Express products, targeting the SMB market
with simplified licensing for fully functional Domino software, minus a few high-end features. ..."
-
Two survey-based reports tackle 2004 Messaging Usage -
"The makeup of the enterprise messaging server landscape has continued to change in favor of Microsoft,
which now appears to hold 53 percent of all enterprise messaging server deployments.
Lotus Domino deployments among US companies have declined slightly, holding roughly 24 percent of the U.S. market."
-
For Microsoft Exchange shops, a chance to switch, simplify and save -
"Why have corporations using Microsoft Exchange been slow to move to Exchange Server 2003, the latest version of the messaging system? ...
One big reason is that the move to Exchange 2003 — like the move to Exchange 2000 before it — is more a
full-fledged migration than an upgrade. ... this pattern of rip-and-replace migrations, coupled with building uncertainty over Exchange’s future, has many
Exchange shops questioning whether they want to stay on the Exchange path at all."

-
Exchange 12 To Rely On JET Engine Standby
- what's interesting in this article is the final few paragraphs:
"... Microsoft down-scaling its grand
Exchange plans may work in its favor. At one point, Microsoft pushed
Exchange Server as the basis for collaborative applications in an
attempt to dislodge Lotus Domino. But Exchange was not up to the
task. Meanwhile, "people started collaborating through blogs or
doing app design through Web portals. Exchange got lucky in a sense.
By not going to groupware, it's not stuck behind a portal and a hard
place right now. ... The retreat from once-promised features
has confused partners and customers alike. "[Microsoft] flubbed the
whole unified store thing. Their credibility is shot with respect to
collaboration on Exchange," said one longtime Exchange partner. ...
But perhaps more important, for many companies, legacy mail systems
such as Exchange and Domino are beside the point ... "In small and
medium-[size] businesses, Exchange faces Hotmail, [which] gives you
250 Mbytes of free storage, a calendar that can interact with
Office, and it's free. If that's not enough, you can pay $9.95 a
month and get more. That's an appealing story."

the answer depends on a company's unique environment and expectations.

Ferris Research report (PDF file) 05 November, 2002:
- Don't Bother Migrating from Notes/Domino to Exchange
-
Why would any Notes/Domino shop migrate away from their current platform?
They have a complete collaborative environment in a single server, that supports email, calendaring,
and collaborative applications, and that runs on a variety of server operating systems. ... Essentially,
Microsoft has pulled back on its vision of Exchange as a Notes-killer, and re-focused it on just email
and calendaring. All collaborative capabilities are to be done in either SharePoint Team Services
or SharePoint Portal Server. This means a customer needs multiple servers to do "collaboration the Microsoft way".

-
Resource Reservations May Not Work on a Domino 7 Server -
if the Resource Reservation database is based on a template from Notes 6.x or earlier.
The Resource Reservation database (RRDB) must use the Domino 7 template, due to a complete redesign.
For example, rooms requested through users' calendars will not be booked and no notifications are sent,
and reservations booked directly in the RRDB will appear to have processed but busy time is not updated. For the best results, the
design of this database must be upgraded at the same time you upgrade the server to Domino 7.0.

How to
Decommission a Domino Server -
Have you ever tried to combine two Domino servers into one server? How about rename a Domino server?
Both of these situations sound simple -- register and install a new server, and then move all of the resources
from the old server(s) to the new one. In theory, that is true. The reality, however, is a situation far from simple.
Changing server names, for whatever reason, is a tedious task that tests your attention to detail. ...

DISASTER PLANNING - RECOVERY - CONTINUITY
-
Lotus Notes Diagnostic Tool (LND) - Automatically perform repetitive tasks associated with files from a Lotus Domino server crash,
hang, or performance issues. This FREE tool (from the Lotus Sandbox) is based on the internal tool that Lotus Support uses
to analyze NSD and other files resulting from a Lotus Domino server crash, hang, or performance issues.
-
Recovery for Lotus Notes -
repairs corrupted Lotus Notes databases (.nsf files). Supported Lotus Notes versions: 8.0, 7.0, 6.5 and 6.0 --
The recovered data is saved into a set of DXL (Domino Extensible Language) files to be used for rebuilding
the Lotus Notes database. This can be done manually or using an auto-generated rebuild batch file.
(Does not restore Applets, StyleSheets and DataConnections, recover OLE objects, or recover file attachments.)
Find out if a Lotus Notes file is recoverable using the
demo version of Recovery for Lotus Notes on it, which will
recover a limited number of strings in each form. No additional
forms or any other elements and features of the original
corrupted file will be restored by the full commercial version
if not present in demo output.

Data integrity - the most overlooked aspect of the Lotus Notes environment ...
"In the IBM Lotus Notes and Domino environment, data integrity issues such as replication conflicts, disconnected links,
or hidden or lost fields are common. In a Notes environment, unlike more "mainstream" database systems such as Oracle or DB2,
it is rare to find a database administrator, someone who has the specific responsibility of managing the data within the system.
As a result, the integrity (or lack thereof) of the Notes production environment can put your organization at risk."

Lotus Workplace: The next Notes? -
Lotus is positioning Workplace as an alternative to Microsoft Office for companies that need more than e-mail,
Word docs and spreadsheets. In the long run it could be Workplace, not WebSphere, that puts Notes out to pasture. ...
"IBM is hoping that nobody will think it's trying to force Workplace down anyone's throat.
Instead, it's seen as an incremental, gradual migration strategy.
You don't have to [migrate] if you don't want to, but if you do there's a lot of new stuff to enable you
to more closely integrate your Lotus desktop with the other things you're doing on the desktop. ...
I don't think IBM believes people who have Microsoft Office are going to say 'Let's ditch this and get that Lotus stuff. ...
IBM and Lotus are seeking to ensure that Notes DLLs can be used in the Workplace client environment.
Lotus is smoothing the path, no longer making it appear that it's trying to create this migration imperative.
Instead it's just an option. Eventually, to speed that migration, there will be tools available
to assist developers in making the transition."
